My Musical Journey
Well, I guess I will start at the beginning; I was born in 1969 {not the highway} at Geraldton WA. Both parents were musical. Mum had a beautiful voice as did my Dad who is still singing and writing today. Dad always had a tea chest or paint tin bass, and my Mum had a huge double bass that graced the corner of each of our lounge rooms. Dad was wonderful at playing all three. I loved hearing him play and wanted to join in, but my little hands could never hold the strings down. One of my earliest memories of singing is with an old reel to reel tape recorder. We, as in myself, two older sisters, Mum and Dad, would spend hours singing as Dad taped us. I never wanted to stop, and I still have one of the early recordings thanks to my Dad.
By the time I was 6 we were living in Victoria and I was sure I was to be ABBA’s lead singer should Freda fell ill. I was ready to step Up and take her place; I knew all the words of all their songs and must have driven my folks mad as I ran around the house singing them over and over, pretending I was Freda.
Towards the end of 1976 we moved to Queensland, where the inspiration, or true story if you believe, came for my song “Eighteen cats and two dogs” Yes, I know when you hear it, it sounds too obscure to be true, believe me it is and I have photographs to prove it!!! We settled in the small country town of Nanango two hours north of Brisbane, camping at the Cattle Dip Yards for around a month (it seemed so much longer). Eventually the property contract was approved, and we then camped on the block until we purchased a house that was moved from Kingaroy to Bill Camp Nanango by truck.
When I started school at Nanango Primary, I joined the school choir and band. I played recorder, bass recorder, and tambourine in year eight; I joined the then very modern school band. We preformed many new songs from the era. We went on tour to Biloela, stopping and performing at different schools there and back. Around this time my Mum and Dad had singing gigs with a small group of country singers and I just had to get in on the act. We would perform at RSL clubs and retirement homes.
After completing school, I would sing where and whenever I could. I would ask visiting acts if I could sing on their shows if they knew any of the songs I sang, and luckily most times they did. I got to sing with some cool acts. I ended up putting my singing on hold for a few years, raising my son Jessie and doing the odd gig here and there. Having daughter Reanna in 1995 also kept me busy. I entered my first country music competition at Pine River in 1997 and gained experience and plenty of expert advice. I won many trophies and competed at Champion of Champions, two years in a row at Kedron, It was around this time I recorded an album of my songs, “My Country” was born. It has been a long road to get this album released, but I have enjoyed all the trials along the way.
I feel my songs reflect my life’s journey. I would like to thank you for your support in purchasing my CD and hope you enjoy the musical ride.
I would like to thank the many people that have contributed to this album and who have continued to give me encouragement and support over the years.
Thanks to my Mum, Dad and Steffy. To my family and Friends for your honesty and many song topics!
